Multiple Sclerosis

NTRehab physiotherapy service offers home visits for patients who have a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

What is Multiple Sclerosis (M.S.)?

M.S. is a condition that affects your brain and spinal cord. With this condition, the coating that protects your nerves (myelin) is damaged.

Myelin helps messages travel quickly and smoothly between the rest of the body.

In multiple sclerosis your immune system, which helps to fight off infections, mistakes myelin as a foreign body and attacks it. This damage to the myelin leaves plaques or scars which then disrupts the messages travelling along the nerve fibres.

The messages can slow down, become distorted or not get through at all.

As well as losing the myelin, there can sometimes be damage to the actual nerve fibres too. It`s this nerve damage that causes the increase in disability that can occur over time.

How can physiotherapy help with multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis physiotherapy treatment can play a very important part in helping people with M.S. manage their condition in the following ways:

  • Exercises to build strength and stamina and to improve range of movement at stiff joints.
  • Hands on therapy to encourage normal patterns of movement. This is based on the ‘Bobath Concept’.
  • Balance exercises.
  • Walking re-education.
  • Advice on spasticity management
  • Treatment of foot-drop, for example advice on splints or muscle stimulation.
  • Advice on walking aids or equipment.
